Hyman David Blum was a Latvian immigrant trained as a blacksmith. In 1908, he started a business in Pittsburgh, manufacturing functional and ornamental objects of wrought iron and other metals. Hyman's sons, Louis, Max, and Harry worked for the company and it was renamed Hyman Blum Company and later Blumcraft Company.
